Posts: 24 (11/15/07 13:05:30) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I picked up 2 Schlueter pots Sw Bail. The are both repainted 1 has quit a few ping marks on the top with most of all the cork finish gone. The other has a few dents and scrapes and has about 50% of the cork finish. My question or even a poll. How many of you out there would try to restore the pots or how many would just leave alone?? I am about 50/50 something tells me to restore and something tells me to just leave them . I will post a few pictures later today CT

Thats all post war re-paint a few times over. Re-painting and restoring would do it some good, and if its a good restoration it will bring up the value a bit! Plus, restoring helmets is pretty fun (for me anyways) Farrell

I am a little confused on the color paint to use and the process of putting on the ground up cork. If anyone has any good directions or pictures of this process it would be great. I also read somewhere that you can get some kind of filler to fix up the dents is that a good idea. I kina like the dents. The one helmet look like it was used for a hammer to pound in stakes.... Posts: 45 (11/16/07 12:48:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have found, the best way to fix dents, is to take a wooden base ball bat, put the helmet up-side-down on a rug laid on top of a hard surface. Use the rounded end of the bat to pound the dents back into place. For the rim, get an anvil and a wooden mallet and pound it back into place. Both techniques work quite well! For applying cork, spray the helmet completely stripped helmet, with a slow drying clear flat coat. This also acts as a primer. As its drying, sprinkle, or blow your cork onto your helmet (Jmurrayinc1944 has the best cork) Or you can grade your own with a cheese grader using the smallest grit! Once you have your cork applied, spray it again with clear coat and let it dry. Once that is dryed, spray a few coats of your olive drap paint on, and then place in your oven for about 45 min to an hour to bake the paint. Not only is baking an original process, but it weathers just like the originals did. I myself use a flat olive drab paint from AtoZone. It dryes fast. Its a bit darker when first applied. But when set in the sun, and used on about 6 re-enactments, you cant tell it from an original. Farrell

Posts: 29 (11/16/07 13:32:59) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I'd cut the bottom off a small oxygen bottle or an old fire extinguisher with a hacksaw (use any cylinder that is designed for holding a pressure as these are usually thick enough and have a domed end) I welded mine onto a piece if box section steel and I stand it up in a vise so the vise will withstand the blows instead of slipping through the jaws as you hit it. Use a ball peen hammer and gradually start working the metal around the edges, working round the edge of the dent slowly working in a circular motion towards the centre. Try to use the flat of the hammer, but don't let the edge of the hammer hit it or it will bruise the metal. take your time and the dent will eventually dissappear, you will get a "feel" for the sound of the hammer blow to know that you are hitting it in the correct place (it will be a dull sound , not a ringing type ) You should then finish off with a bit of emery paper or wet and dry, or possibly if you have one, use a sander. You can practice by knocking a dent in a bit of similar thickness steel and practice getting the dent out, it is very rewarding if you master the technique. I use this method (amongst others) when I make reproduction armour and it works well

I left the helmet with the SGT stripes alone. I just need to put net on it and and shell will be done. The repaint was kinda challanging. The cork was the hardest part. I added a nice custom decal on the front. It's the 66th ID which my father served in during WWII. I will post some pictures later today..

I experimented with a restored helmet and left it outside all summer it the sun and it helped to make the paint look weathered and faded I also used sea water from the pacific ocean and wrapped it in a plastic bag for several days and it made it look aged with some patina on the exposed metal

I would get the chin straps from "WhatpriceGlory.com" They have the best 11 row weave straps Ive seen. Jmurrayinc1944.com has the best helmet restoration parts for helmets and liners, but their chin strap webing is the only thing I never realy liked. For weathering, putting it outside is the best way. Take a nail file and use the edge of it to nick the stainless rim, this exposes metal and gives it a used look. If you want to age it faster, get a mix of lemon juice, salt, and water and wet it down with it a few times, it will rust the metal slightly, but will not damage it. (not to mention it smells lemony fresh! ) Letting mud sit on it for a while gives the paint a permanately dirty look to it, but only slightly! Put it upside down, ans roll it a few times all over with a bit of weight applied. This kinda flattens the cork, making it look like it wore down from age. I aged one of my helmets like that, and let it sit in my back yard where the sprinklers would get it. So it was watered daily! It aged the paint, and made rust staines on the straps, and bales. It turned out quite well! It is the best way to make it look old. It will never look like a 100% duplicate of an original, but will look nice at first glance! Best of luck! Farrell

The changing temperatures are hard on metal, and can cause "stress cracks". Especially in the cold, metal can crack if its been cold, and then in the morning hit with sunlight and warmed up! If it is sat upright, it will reduce the chance of that happening. I have never realy figured out why, but if it is set upside down, it has a bigger chance of developing such cracks! Im not talking about huge cracks, but hair thin ones. So, be wary of that! Farrell
